Ridge and Valley

Virginia map highlighting the Ridge and Valley

This working group is chaired by Allen Boynton of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF). The group's focus to date has been on early-successional species in the region, and particularly on Golden-winged Warblers. Surveys for the species were coordinated by the US Forest Service and the Virginia Important Bird Area (IBA) Program in 2005 and 2006 in support of the Allegheny Highlands IBA nomination. In 2007, the Center for Conservation Biology at William and Mary completed a status assessment of the species through funding by DGIF (State Wildlife Grants), and these data were incorporated in Cornell's Golden-winged Warbler Atlas. The group met in May of 2008 to discuss coordination with the international Golden-winged Warbler Working Group and the Appalachian Woodcock Initiative, and is planning future habitat assessment work for Golden-wings. Coordination with the Appalachian Mountains Joint Venture is also ongoing.
